Mr. Jerry Hester, President HORITA Corporation Dear Jerry, I wanted to take some time and let you know the results of our initial tests of the HORITA PG-2100 portable time code generators. Our challenge was to cover the Defender trials portion of the 1995 America’s Cup being held off the coast of San Diego, California. We had to present these races in a manner similar to the extended coverage of the Challengers trials, but at a substantially reduced financial outlay. The producer wanted to integrate aerial footage from a Betacam in a helicopter, Betacam footage from a chase boat on the race course, and two SVHS recordings that were on-board the actual competing yachts – four different non-synchronous sources that had to be cut together as live. The kicker was he had only five hours from the end of the race until the edited program was to air live! Our solution was to sync the four sources together with four HORITA PG-2100 portable time code generators. We chose these devices because of the ability to jam-sync from an external source-in this case your HORITA GPS-MTG GPS based Master SMPTE time code generator. Due to the limited access to the competing yachts, the waterproof enclosure containing the electronics for the on-board camera, the SVHS vtr and the time code generator had to be synchronized as much as twelve hours ahead of time. Following the first race, the recordings from the four sources were brought to the edit facility, and, with crossed fingers, loaded into the playback machines. When the editor began reading the time code, the pictures were in perfect sync. Result: one very happy producer. The show was assembled and ready to air with five minutes to spare. Needless to say, we were very happy with the performance of the PG-2100s, and the accuracy of the GPS. The products performed exactly as promised. Good job. Thanks for your help, Doug Dodson |
