Pocket PA Bluetooth Wireless Time Code Logging System

The Pocket "Production Assistant" is a complete Pocket PC- based Bluetooth wireless time code logging system. It includes the Horita TCBTx time code reader/ Bluetooth transmitter and a Pocket PC with Horita's PDA-LOG™ logging software pre-installed.

The TCBTx LTC-Bluetooth wireless transmitter broadcasts the time code from the source, such as a TV camera or house TC generator, to the Pocket PC. A single touch of the Pocket PC stylus captures the time code and allows the user to enter comments. An optical character recognition (OCR) program deciphers handwritten notes and inserts them into data fields or the user can enter predefined "canned" notes such as "Mark IN", "Mark OUT", "Action", etc.

  • Logs can be saved in Horita's PC-LOG text format, as an EDL, or as a comma- or tab- delimited file for use in other applications.

  • Share logs among Pocket PC's via an infrared link or export to a PC when the Pocket PC is placed in its cradle and "synchronized".

* Also available without Pocket PC- $449

TC-Toolkit™ Tape Logging Software

PC-LOG Captures time code or user bits and calculates durations with a single keystroke. Log tapes while reading or generating (some models) time code, add comments, print, read/save to disk, search for key words or phrases using wildcard characters, print "search" report. Ten "Macro Keys" permit single keystroke to capture time and insert any pretyped message of up to 34 characters. Scene/take counter macro key operates with special IN and OUT macro keys to tag entries and auto increment take counter. Converts PC-LOG files into standard CMX 340 EDL format, or into comma delimited files for import into a database.

TC-WINCALC Time code calculator with separate tape timer does all drop frame/non-drop frame and film foot-frame math, imports and exports time code, user bits, and other calculator values directly into and out of word processor documents, database or spreadsheet fields, etc.

TG-SET Use with TRG-50PC and VLR-100PC to quickly preset generator time code and user bits from keyboard, single key to set time code to PC's real-time clock time, user bits to date, start/stop generator, turn displays on/off.

MTG-TIME Synchronizes a PC’s time and date (optional) to UTC or any local time via a SMPTE time code input from a Horita GPS-MTG GPS- based master time code generator or other “time of day” time code source.

Common questions about PC-LOG and the TC-TOOLKIT

Q: Is there a "standard" tape log format and does PC- LOG adhere to this standard?
A: There is no standardized screen, file, or other format for logging tapes. PC-LOG has its own proprietary screen format, which also matches its file format. However, the PC-LOG program can translate a PC-LOG log file into other file formats so that the PC-LOG information can be exported to standard database, spreadsheet, and EDL programs. This prevents you from being "locked in" to the PC-LOG format, and also allows you to collect information with PC-LOG, and process it with other programs, if desired.

Q: Can I log user bits with the PC-LOG program?
A: With PC-LOG you can select user bits instead of time code for logging your tapes. This would be the method to use if there was a different time code, or other information contained in the user bits, on which you wanted to base your tape log. It would be more common to just want to get the user bit information into your tape log, along with the time code and your comments. This could be the case if the user bits contained the scene-take number, or film foot/frame information. To do this, all you need to do is load up TC-WINCALC and then "paste" the user bits from TC-WINCALC into the PC-LOG comment field, using conventional Windows “copy” and “paste” shortcuts.

Q: What is meant by a "pure ASCII" file when referring to the files created by the PC- LOG program?
A: Pure ASCII means that PC-LOG files do not contain any control characters that would cause your word processor or other program to automatically perform some special function.

Q: How can I use the HORITA TC-TOOLKIT to do my tape logging, build a tape log library, or add time code information to scripts?
A: There are several ways to use the TC-TOOLKIT for tape logging, as well as for performing other kinds of related time code functions.

Common applications for PC-LOG and the TC-TOOLKIT

Use PC-LOG for Tape Logging

One of the simplest ways to log tapes is to use the PC-LOG™ program. PC-LOG™ captures time code with a single keystroke, and then allows you to enter comments. Its powerful search and report functions allow you to search your logs for keywords in either the setup area of the log, the comment area, or both, and get custom printed reports.

You can quickly and easily command PC-LOG™ to search the log files in your current folder only, or to search other folders as well, even search through and give you a report on every log file on your entire hard disk.

Because you can limit the search to looking for information in the PC-LOG™ setup area only, you can sort your logs according to specific information contained in the four divisions of the setup area: PRODUCTION, SHOOT, TAPE, LOG. This search criteria has more to do with people, places, dates, tape format, etc., rather than the actual content of the logs that make up your log library.

The keyword search criteria entered into the fields of the setup and/or comment areas can use the "*" and "?" wildcard characters when exact words or spelling are not known, as well as use the "AND" and "OR" logical operators to restrict or expand the search. The more fields in which you enter search criteria, the more selective the search becomes.

The actual search report produced from the PC-LOG™ search operation contains all of the search criteria entered, plus all of the "hits". Each report also includes the setup information for each qualifying log, and its entire path so you know exactly where the log can be found on your computer. This report can be saved on disk or printed out.

Use PC-LOG™ With Your Database Program

Once you have logged your tapes using PC-LOG™, you can then save your log as a "comma delimited" ASCII file for importing into your data base system. This gives you the advantage of having access to all of the PC-LOG™ search and report functions, as well as being able to use your database program to sort, search, and create custom reports from your database.

Use TC-WINCALC™ With Your Word Processor

You may choose to log your tapes using the TC-WINCALC™ program along with your favorite word processor. First create your own custom tape log format with your word processor, then log your tapes by importing the tape time code location from your HORITA unit directly into your word processor. This is done by simply positioning the cursor to the desired log fields and then keying the appropriate Windows copy and paste commands. You can also add duration, user bits, etc., from TC-WINCALC™, or use this technique to review tapes along with scripts to add the time code location, duration, or user bit scene-take information into scripts.

Use TC-WINCALC™ With Your Database Program

You can simultaneously log your tapes and develop a database library system using TC-WINCALC™ along with your database program. First, define fields in your database for input of time code, user bits, duration, frame number, IN time, OUT time, comments, etc., then fill in the fields using the appropriate Windows copy and paste commands to import the time code values from TC-WINCALC™ directly into the database fields. You can then use all the power of your database program to provide sorting, searching, and custom reports.
